RV life comes with a long list of perks and benefits. Unfortunately, the luxury of having an abundance of space isn’t one of them. As any RVers know, finding storage space for all your belongings on the road can be a challenge. Optimizing space is the golden rule of RV storage, and we’ve compiled some of the best RV storage ideas other RVers have applied this golden rule. In this article, you’ll find RV storage hacks that are sure to help you find storage solutions for all your RV rooms.

RV Kitchen Storage Ideas

Many RVers find that the kitchen is one of the trickiest rooms to keep organized. As with other rooms in an RV, the key is to maximize every inch of available space and find a way to use it for storage. Here are some creative ways that other RVers have created additional storage opportunities in their kitchens.

1. Cabinet Door Storage

Alternative Storage Ideas for RV

Cabinet doors are often overlooked as a viable storage option. If there is even an inch or two of space between the cabinet door and the contents of the cabinet when the door is closed, there’s an opportunity to create more storage. Consider adding racks like the ones pictured to the inside or outside of cabinet doors.

Here’s a set of over-the-door cabinet organizers we love!

2. Cork Boards & Magnets

Hanging cork boards or magnetic whiteboards in your RV can help keep small, miscellaneous items out of the way. You can hang your keys from a thumbtack on a corkboard or add a small magnetic bin to a whiteboard to store mail or other light items.

We love these self-adhesive corkboard squares because they can be cut into fun shapes or letters!

3. Stackable Food Storage Containers to Organize RV Cabinets

Food storage can pose a challenge in any kitchen, but the smaller your cabinet is, the more important it becomes to maximize every bit of available space. Going all in on some uniform, stackable food storage containers can ensure that you’re making the most of the space inside your RV pantry.
Our favorite type of food storage container for organizing the RV pantry is these deli-style containers that come in multiple sizes. They don’t take up much space when stacked together, and, most importantly, all the sizes share the same lid!

4. Cabinet Tension Rods to Keep Things on RV Shelves

Tension rods are a versatile tool for RVers, but one unique way to put them to use is to help keep the contents in your kitchen cabinets in place while you’re on the road.

These are perfect for all different size cabinets and even the inside of your refrigerator to keep contents from shifting!

5. Add An Extra Shelf to an RV Cabinet

A common problem RVers face with their cabinets is wanting to optimize the space but not wanting to stack things so high that they are unstable or likely to shift on the road. One of the best solutions to this problem is to add extra shelving to your cabinets. This way, you can utilize much more of the space inside the cabinet without the items at the very top being stacked on top of everything that is below it.

You can purchase stackable shelves on Amazon to add to your kitchen cabinets, or read this article about an easy, no-drilling way to add wooden shelves to your cabinets!

6. RV Spice Storage

If you’re not willing to sacrifice the quality of your food while you’re on the road (and why should you?), then you know that spices and seasonings are a must-have. One of our favorite spice hacks is to install a magnetic spice storage wall. It’s a great way to utilize small bits of otherwise-unusable wall space.

Counter and drawer space in an RV kitchen is precious and hard to come by, so whenever possible, try to find another place to put items commonly stored on the counter or in a drawer. Consider a wall-mounted utensil rack for bulky utensils like spatulas, whisks, and ladles.

If your RV has high ceilings, a hanging pot rack can help you make use some of the space above your head. While this might not be the best idea for motorhome owners who don’t want to hear pots and pans clanging around while they’re driving down the road, the owners of this fifth wheel said they had no problems leaving these pots hanging while driving.

11. Baskets

We think all the ideas on this list are helpful in their own way, but baskets are in a league of their own when it comes to RV storage. Baskets are available in endless styles, shapes, and sizes and can be incorporated into all rooms of an RV. If a nice aesthetic is a priority to you, you can’t go wrong with baskets. In the kitchen, baskets are a great option for storing anything from towels and oven mitts to cookbooks and recipes, or even silverware.

RV Bathroom Storage Ideas

As small as most RV bathrooms are, they can feel cluttered with even a few items out of place. Luckily, there are a few must-have storage solutions that are sure to bring order to even the smallest RV bathroom.

14. Adhesive or hanging shower caddies

A shower caddy is a good way to have a place to put shampoo, razors, and other items and not have to worry about them falling or shifting around while you’re on the road. If you don’t have a good place to hang one over the wall of your RV shower, you can get an adhesive shower caddy and stick it to the wall instead.

It’s easy to overlook storage for dirty laundry as you consider all your storage needs for your RV, but it’s a part of life that doesn’t stop when you’re on the road. If space in your bathroom allows, consider hanging a mesh laundry bag on the door to shed your clothes into before showering. We like this one with a decorative macrame fringe.

If the cabinet space under your bathroom sink is already jam packed, see if you can squeeze in a little extra storage space by getting creative like this RV owner did. Baskets like these are available online or at most stores for very cheap, and they can be mounted on the inside of cabinet doors with some command hooks. You may need to rearrange the contents of the cabinet to ensure the door will still close securely, but you may find that the extra space this small addition offers is worth the trouble.

Maximizing counter space in your RV’s bathroom is just as important as it is in the kitchen. Creating some more opportunities for vertical storage is a solution many RVers have found helpful. Two-tiered bathroom shelves like this one from Amazon is one way to immediately double the space you have for storing personal items on your bathroom counter.

On the topic of maximizing vertical space, we absolutely love this idea by a fellow RVer. Aside from a few hanging towels and perhaps a framed picture for decoration, this is space that would have been otherwise unusable in this bathroom. With the help of a tension rod and a little creativity, there is now more storage space than some of us would know what to do with! Place bathroom necessities directly into the cubbies for easy access or include bins for a neater look.

21. Cart for storage in tight spaces

Having spaces that seem too small to do anything with can be frustrating. Perhaps you have a bit of space between the sink and the wall or between the toilet and the shower. If this is the case, break out the measuring tape and see if one of these slim storage carts can be squeezed in there. Keep cleaning supplies or extra rolls of toilet paper handy and tucked away out of sight.

We love this idea from Sherry, who found that recycling everyday objects like old tissue boxes is a perfect way to contain lots of bathroom necessities and keep them from rolling around and falling over while on the road.

Living Areas

You want the time you spend lounging in your RV to feel relaxing and peaceful, and, let’s be honest… that can be tough if you’re surrounded by clutter. Here are some clever ways that others have turned the available space in their RV living rooms into functional and attractive storage solutions.

23. Decorative baskets

They’ve made an appearance on this list before, but they’re worth another mention: baskets. Tuck them under tables, put them on a shelf, or set them on the floor next to the couch. Whatever you need them for, whatever your interior decor theme is, and however much space you have, there is sure to be a basket (or ten) that meet your RV’s needs. Use them to hold extra blankets, excess wires and cords, remotes and other electronics, or pretty much anything else.

Here’s a link to some like the ones in the picture.

24. Hidden RV storage inside the sofa

The couch is likely to be one of the largest fixtures in your RV’s living room, and think about all the space there is between the couch cushions and the floor. This is space that often goes to waste in an RV. One of the best ways to add a ton of storage space to your RV’s living room is to invest in a couch with some storage built in.

Admittedly, this is not the cheapest solution on this list, and it might not be the right move for everyone. But if you can spare the expense and think that all the extra storage space might help you relax more comfortably in your RV, it might just be worth it.

If you already love the couch you have and there is some space available underneath it (like this one), consider buying some slide out bins to make use of that space.

25. Ottomans that double as storage

If you’re already maximizing the space under your couch, consider adding some extra storage space with a storage ottoman. We’re a big fan of storage that serves another function, and ottomans might be the best example of this. Use the ottoman as extra seating or a comfortable footrest while letting it keep stray living room items out of sight.

26. Coffee tables with storage

Another way to maximize living room storage is by opting for a coffee table with some storage space built in. We love this coffee table from Amazon (available in multiple colors) that has shelving and a stand that pops up to reveal another large storage compartment.

27. RV Office Organization

Anyone working from home understands the importance of maintaining a workspace that feels separate from the rest of your home. The importance (and difficulty) of this is even greater in an RV, where space is precious and everything exists in close quarters. If you are working on the road and you need more than a laptop to do your job, consider investing in a desk setup that allows you to keep all your work materials in one place and not scattered all around the rest of your RV.

28. Chairs with storage added

Creative RVer Tammi Arends shared on Facebook how she and her husband turned a set of four chairs into additional storage. Clever solutions like this can be labor intensive, but so worth it when the project is completed.

RV Shoes Storage Ideas

As we’ve continued to emphasize throughout this post, the key to finding RV storage solutions is all about identifying where there is empty space and figuring out a way to utilize it. That’s exactly what this RVer did when she turned the empty space underneath her stairs into shoe storage. We love this solution because it’s convenient, offers a simple solution to an all-too-common problem (so. many. shoes.), and didn’t require the purchase of any extra materials.

30. Bamboo Shoe Shelf

Whether you’re searching for storage solutions for your bedroom or the kids’ room, we’re here to offer some of the best ideas we’ve seen for tackling the issue of where to keep clothes in RV bedrooms.

31. Cascading hangers

Space saving RV closet idea - cascading hangers

A quick fix for jam-packed closets is to invest in some cascading hangers. These hangers allow you to make use of your closet from top to bottom, rather than cramming all your clothes in straight across the rack and leaving lots of empty space near the bottom.

32. Over-the-door storage bins

This over-the-door hanging organizer comes in several different color patterns and are a great place to store leggings, socks, underwear, and other small clothing items. These can be used in any room in your RV with a door, but we find them particularly useful in the bedroom and bathroom.

Via Carolyn Suchecki (on Facebook group)

Of course we’ve all utilized the space under our beds to move clutter out of sight. (Remember “cleaning your room” as a kid?) If your RV bed has easily accessible space below it, consider adding sliding drawers or bins to try to keep it organized. If your bed sits atop solid panels, it might be more of an involved project to create the opportunity for under-bed storage.

This RVer found the perfect spot to keep her laundry hamper out of sight under her bed.

34. Shoe organizers for clothing or shoes

by Sarah Heming of Two Wheel Ramblin

We mentioned shoe organizers as a storage lifesaver in tiny RV bathrooms, and we think they can be equally useful to hang in bedroom closets. Use them for storing shoes, as intended, or roll up pants, T-shirts, pajamas, or other articles of clothing that don’t need to be hung.

35. Add shelves or drawers to closets

By Karen Ebling

If you struggle to make the most of your closet space, consider adding some shelves or drawers. This can help you ensure that you’re utilizing the space in the whole closet from top to bottom.

37. Drawer dividers

If you have a dresser or drawers in your bedroom, adding some drawer dividers like these from Amazon can help you keep the contents organized and easily accessible.

Conclusion

Finding adequate storage for all your belongings can be a bigger challenge than you might have expected in your RV life. Identifying unused space, keeping an open mind about creative solutions, and a little bit of trial and error are key to finding storage solutions that work for you and your rig. We hope this list sparked some ideas for you, and we can’t wait to hear how you’ve implemented these solutions or any others you’ve tried!
