Real-Life Craft Rooms and Craft Spaces in RVs

RV Sewing Room

If sewing is your passion, don’t be intimidated by a lack of space. This RV dweller, Chenae, turned the slide in her fifth wheel living room into her dedicated sewing space. Good lighting is essential when doing a craft as meticulous as sewing, so by utilizing the natural light from the surrounding windows, she makes the best of the space. This setup does take up a significant amount of space, given the size and weight of a sewing table like this, so it’s best suited for someone who is serious about their craft and has an RV large enough to dedicate an entire slide to just that purpose.

If crafting is your small business, and you live the RV life, you don’t have to choose one or the other. This RVer is a leather smith who travels around, selling her incredible handmade goods. But she does it all from the back of a toy hauler. With the bed lifted, there is ample space to set up tables, display merchandise, and have a blank slate for their craft. The back of a toy hauler can be a great place for a studio because it’s meant for rugged handling, can open to bring tools in and out, and offers a very non-restrictive setup.

Toy Hauler Craft Room

Yet again, a toy hauler’s garage is the ideal room for creating craft space in an RV! This crafter turned her RV garage space into a cozy craft room, complete with a sofa (for the dogs to lounge, of course!) and a table that gives her surface space to create and secure storage. There’s a pegboard on the walls to hang small items like ribbons and pens. We know how important utilizing vertical space is when you live in an RV! This is a great example of blending your RV craft space with everyday living.

This craft room is every whimsical crafter’s dream! We are fairly certain this is a stationary RV due to the china cabinet with plates displayed (that could be quite challenging to travel with!), but they are making great use of space in the back room of this RV. With busts for seamstress work and plenty of cabinets and dressers for storage, it’s safe to say this RVer isn’t shy to let their craft take over a whole part of their RV.

Crafting Corner for Kids

Craft rooms don’t have to be entire rooms in your RV. Sometimes you can only dedicate a corner, or in this case, a drop-down table. The RV owners turned the cabinet storage under their kids’ lofted bed into a craft and homework area. The cabinets under the table offer hidden storage for all the things—paper, scissors, paint, etc, while the little shelf has access to books and even a small screen. The stools are stackable, and the best part is that when the table isn’t being used, they can fold it up. This is great for traveling families and those who homeschool!

Craft Storage and Organization Ideas for RVs

Whether you dedicate a whole room or just a few drawers to a craft space, there are so many ways to maximize the space so you don’t have to leave any of your favorite hobbies behind to hit the road. We have several RV craft storage ideas to keep you organized! Let’s dive into a few tried and true ones.

Drawer Dividers and Stackable Bins

Drawer dividers can be great for small items like pencils, markers, and smaller crafting items. They keep your items organized and safe from shifting when you’re in transit. Stackable bins are also a favorite of ours for RV storage!

Clear Containers for Visibility

Getting clear containers can save you the hassle of having to take all the bins out and dig through them to find what you want—we also highly encourage labeling your bins for ease!

Rolling Carts or Slim Storage Towers

Rolling carts are a great way to store items in an RV. They are lightweight, take up vertical space and minimal floor space, and can quite literally roll from room to room wherever you need it. Just ensure that they are secured properly before travel.

Wall-Mounted Organizers and Pegboards

Depending on what you need to store (like thread and ribbon!) a pegboard above your desk can be a great way to store items. They are right there, face and center but still don’t take up much space. Always be sure whatever you put on the wall is secure and fastened in a way that doesn’t damage the RV.

We have tips on adhesive storage items!

Over the Door Storage

This is one of the simplest ways to store things, and cost effective. An over-the-door storage container is lightweight, can be moved easily, and is very inexpensive. They can also hold a lot of small items, so it’s a win-win!

Under the Bed Storage

Using the storage under your RV bed is a genius way to safely store items—and it’s the perfect spot for items you might not use every single day, like crafting supplies. You can use rolling bins under the bed if you have space, or soft form garment boxes.

Tips for Traveling with Craft Supplies in an RV

When traveling with your craft supplies, you want to make sure they are secure. Things like scissors, sewing needles, or sharp blades can easily get lost or slide under a rug, so having those in a sealed bin is essential. Many plastic containers are lightweight, which is also important. For things like paints or liquids, you’ll want to make sure nothing spills while in transit, so sealing them with waterproof lids or keeping them upright in a container that will catch spills is smart! You can also rotate supplies seasonally, or as you need them, so you’re not so overwhelmed cleaning up your craft room every time you have to move.

Designing a Craft Space That Can Flex with RV Life

RV life is all about functionality and flexibility. Everything needs to be multi-functional or at least not take up too much space! That’s also something key to keep in mind when planning your RV craft room. Can the table fold down, or be used for dining, or working? Can you stack the bins and put them away after use? If you use a common space, like a living room, for crafting, keep in mind how much time it will take to turn it back into a living room when the crafting is done. You’ll want to plan storage that doesn’t interfere with your daily RV functions, but also doesn’t make it so challenging to use that you don’t craft!

Conclusion

Creative hobbies are possible in RV life, it just takes a little creative planning and thoughtful design! If the idea overwhelms you, we encourage you to start small. Perhaps it’s just a box of craft supplies you can easily slip under your bed, and as your hobby grows you can adapt and find new ways over time to make it all work in your rig.
