A Beige RV Bedroom Becomes Bold (On A Budget)

My husband Ryan and I (aka The Wandering Wilsons) are photographers, rockhounds, and adventure planners, and we live in a 2006 Winnebago Adventurer 37B.

We purchased our awesome Class A motorhome in 2022, and it was very well-kept and clean, but it was floor-to-ceiling BEIGE and OAK. You know – those nice, light neutrals that are just a bit warmer than white, go with anything, and were trendy like 20 years ago?!? Yeah … well anyone who has ever met me would tell you that I am anything but beige. I don’t even own a pair of khakis.

Clearly, a beige box would never feel like home to me, so I got to work designing a fun, cheerful, inspired space for us to live and work and travel in. Everyone knows that painting is the quickest, easiest, cheapest way to jazz up any space, so why not try something bright and bold?

My trick to make my space really stand out is to experiment with patterns, textures, and textiles, too. I totally transformed the entire vibe of our RV with an eclectic mix of boho-chic and mid-century modern fabrics, a subtle hexagon motif, and colorful painted details.

Planning Our Class A RV Bedroom Redesign

What I really love about our Winnebago Adventurer is its HUGE bedroom with two slides, a large wardrobe, a queen bed, and a sitting (I mean crafting) area with a desk and a folding tabletop.

I knew my predominant color scheme was going to be teal, yellow, and gray because of the bedding I already had – a teal duvet cover, yellow hexagon-patterned sheets, a yellow and gray trellis-patterned throw blanket, and yellow and teal throw pillows.

The flooring in the main cabin had already been upgraded to light gray LVP, and the beige carpet in the RV bedroom and slides was in such great condition that we couldn’t justify the labor and cost to replace it.

The wardrobe, cabinets, closets, doors, trim, and slide frames were solid oak with a clear coat of protective varnish. Instead of creating a massive dust mess by sanding all the wood, I used steel wool and mineral spirits to thin and scuff the surface so the paint would adhere better. After painting, I added a semi-gloss topcoat of Minwax ® polycrylic to seal and protect the freshly painted wood surfaces.

Just Add Fun Fabrics & Playful Paints

The painting of the RV bedroom started with a cool, greener mid-tone of teal on the rear wall and added visual interest with sunny yellow accents on the large mirror panes and trim. Then I did the same on the bedroom door and window-pane trim on the opposite wall.

I also painted the wall behind the bed the same dark teal color and used a natural linen fabric with embroidered yellow hexagons to wrap the headboard and valances in the bed nook. 

I wanted to keep the rest of the room light and airy. So I went for a softer, more serene sky blue-teal on the rest of the walls and on the sides and ceiling inside the bed slide. (I left the main ceiling white.)

We also used Valspar Sculpting Clay, Tabby Cat Gray, and Meteor Dust paint colors, as well as Clark & Kensington (an Ace Brand) in Celebrate the Moment, Captured Heart, and Fiddlehead Fern. 

Mixed and matched fun boho fabrics from my own scrap collection were added on the window valances in my crafting area. I pulled the hexagon motif from the bed area into the craft area by “reupholstering” the folding desk chair with the same linen fabric that I used on the headboard.

Adding Details that Pop!

I got lucky and found a perfect teal and yellow cat caddy to sit in front of our large ‘emergency exit’ window. And I stashed the other folding chair in the storage compartment under the bed.

Then I went to work on the real details … with a few tiny paint brushes and a steady hand, I used COLOR to highlight the craftsmanship in all the woodwork. I painted the bases and faces of all the oak elements (wardrobe, cabinets, desk) in two shades of gray, and used the other wall colors (teal, yellow, light blue-green) in the scoops, bevels, and carvings. I am also a firm believer that you simply can’t look at the color pink and not smile. So, no project is complete without at least a pop of pink! I added a touch of vibrant coral pink to the cabinetry accents, painted the slide frames dark teal and coral, and incorporated yellow and coral in the flowers carved in the corner finials.

Mid-century modern yellow blackout curtains were hung on a wire over the door and interior window panes for added privacy. I threw down white and yellow geometric rugs to hide and protect the beige carpet. And I finished off our bold RV bedroom makeover with some hat hooks and wall decor.

This bedroom renovation was only about $200. Actually, the total for paint and fabrics in the whole RV was less than $500! The RV bedroom was a winter project for me that I spent about 20 hours on due to all the details.
