Part of the allure of living in an RV is the ability to camp in remote places. But outfitting a camper to be 100% off grid can be complicated. You need solar panels, battery banks, and a reliable heating source to start.

For many, a fully sustainable off grid rig might look like an overlanding vehicle or an Earth Roamer. But Carissa R. of @moandtheairstream found a way to make her off grid camper look like a magazine cover-worthy home.

Carissa and her small family have lived a year and a half in this fully off grid camper. The 2015 Grand Design Momentum is the third RV she and her husband, Kyle, have renovated. Even though the RV is built to thrive off the grid, they didn’t skimp on any of the renovations that made this fiver feel like home. Keep scrolling for more photos of this inviting RV.

How to Outfit an Off Grid Camper

The first thing to consider when outfitting a camper to go off grid is how you’re going to create and store electricity.

Carissa added a robust solar electrical system, including six 320w Renogy solar panels, two 270Ah GC3 Battleborn Batteries, and a 3,000w Victron Energy Multiplus II inverter. Also on board is a 5000w Cummins gas-powered generator as an alternate power source. You can monitor your electric system while away through the built-in, wifi-connected battery monitor system.

The battery monitor system will automatically start the onboard generator if the batteries dip below a certain level on cloudy days. The solar and onboard batteries are enough to run one A/C unit onboard the rig.

A Cubic Mini wood stove added for heating gives a rustic charm to this cozy home. Wood stoves are growing in popularity among RVers as a reliable heating source that doesn’t require electricity.

EZ Snap RV skirting added around the rig’s perimeter insulates and protects the camper during winter. This means using even less wood or propane to heat the RV. (The skirting is included in the sale of this RV.)

Between the wood stove and an air conditioner that can run off the solar panels, this fifth wheel is built for full-time living.

Upscale Features Turn This into a Luxury Camper

This cozy Scandinavian aesthetic uses wood and natural tones to warm the small space. A 50/50 mix of Sherwin Williams Olympic Range and Pewter Green paint is on the cabinets to make the style a little more contemporary.

The off-white walls are Sherwin Williams’s Greek Villa, and the cabinets are painted the creamier Shoji White.

From floor to ceiling, high-end features like Flooret LVP and lighting from West Elm are used in this RV renovation.

The RV even includes a dishwasher, a Splendid washer and dryer combo, and a Suburban stove/oven combo. Custom cabinets were added, hiding a Samsung QLED TV that can rise up for movie nights.

The toy hauler floorplan also boasts a fold-out deck where you can enjoy panoramic views of your off-grid campsite. A Happi-Jac electric bunk system with a queen Tuft & Needle mattress can transform the “garage” from a cozy living room to a comfortable guest bedroom. The bed stows away with the push of a button when you need more space.

A Luxurious Bathroom

Even though it’s often the smallest room in a camper, a bathroom renovation can make the biggest statement in a remodel. This bathroom stands out as one of the boldest bathroom remodels we’ve seen lately.

The creamy whites paired with the wooden accent wall create a woodsy elegance in the serene space. This take on a modern slat wall further feeds the Scandinavian design style. You can recreate this look with glue-up mini wood slats from Home Depot.
